From our friends in SEDCo

FREE TAILORING, CRAFT AND FOOD SERVICE TRAINING FOR REFUGEE WOMEN

Dear colleagues and friends,

My name is Sandra Ruiz and I am contacting you on behalf of House of AKI-NA, SEDCo http://sedco.ie.

Just by way of introduction, SEDCo is a charity that uses entrepreneurship as a way of eliminating poverty. We target our work on those living in consistent poverty.

Our model involves hands-on enterprise facilitation. For example, we have an event management social enterprise based in Ballyfermot, Impact Events that runs large-scale community events. Each event involves the local community and we have a training program that trains people in event management. The objective is to then give our volunteers and trainees jobs working at our events or to help them find jobs elsewhere. In the past year, we’ve helped 25 people move out of consistent poverty.

Another of our enterprises, House of AKI-NA www.houseofakina.ie, uses fashion as a means of creating employment. We host workshops with new communities in craft skills, mainly focusing on tailoring and dressmaking. A number of the women who trained with us while in direct provision now run their own small businesses in Ireland making dresses, carrying out alterations and also making products for us which we sell on our website. All of our profits are used to run more workshops.

House of AKI-NA is in the very early stages of development, however, we’ve recently been funded by the Department of Justice, to scale it. The new program is an expansion of the work we’ve previously done. As part of this project, we will provide training to 200 refugee women. During the first stage of this project, women will receive full-day training in 3different sectors, fashion, craft, and food service. During the second stage, we will embrace those women who have shown a more advanced interest and talent providing individual training and follow up to open their own businesses and to become successful job seekers.

Whereas everyone deserves to participate in any training program, for this project we are looking for the right candidates and suitable women who can fully commit and benefit from these training. Therefore, a pre-intermediate English level is required, as well as refugee status, women who have been granted subsidiary protection or humanitarian permission to remain are also eligible.  Childcare and light lunch will be provided during the sessions.

**All training is completely free of charge**
