Why the P.A.S.T.A Test –
Every pasta shape is made from the same simple, humble ingredients—typically flour, eggs, salt, and water—that act as the foundation for countless different meals. Social Enterprises are like pasta – formed from the same simple ingredients – Purpose, Assets, Surplus, Trading and Accountability– that make up 1000s of enterprises across Ireland.

The P.A.S.T.A. Test.ie is funded under the Awareness Raising Initiative for Social Enterprise (ARISE) scheme. The scheme is designed to raise awareness of social enterprises and their positive impact in communities. Social enterprises play a unique role in Irish society and include a wide variety of organisations, including community and voluntary groups, charities, and businesses. The P.A.S.T.A. Test is an easy-to-remember and fun way to highlight the difference between social enterprises, private businesses, and charities with an easy-to-remember acronym – P.A.S.T.A.
