TU Dublin is launching an accredited Social Economy Enterprise Development module from October 2025 to May 2026, designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of social economy enterprises and their impact.

Why This Module Matters

The module offers insights into the origins, evolution, and challenges of social economy enterprises across the EU and North America. It delves into policy influences, governance structures, and the conditions required for successful social enterprises. Participants will explore the lifecycle of social enterprises, from idea generation to trading and sustainability, alongside topics such as community ownership, accountability, and procurement.

  • Social economy enterprise staff and volunteers

  • Representatives from state agencies supporting social enterprise development

Course Structure & Accreditation

Delivered through a mix of online and onsite lectures at TU Dublin, Grangegorman, the module blends theory and practice to equip participants with the skills necessary to develop and sustain vibrant social enterprises. Upon successful completion, students will earn 10 ECTS credits, which can contribute towards a Certificate in Social Economy Enterprise Development or an MSc in Local Development and Innovation.

Entry Requirements & Application Details

Applicants should have an honours Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, though work experience may also be considered. The course fee is €850, and the deadline for applications is Friday, 4th July 2025.

Meet the Module Coordinator

Dr Gerard Doyle, a leading expert in the field, will be coordinating this module. With over 25 years of experience assisting community organisations in social enterprise development—covering areas like upcycling, retrofitting, and sustainable food production—he brings a wealth of knowledge. His research and published work span renewable energy co-operatives, community-owned district heating systems, worker co-operatives, and social enterprise policy.
